STAC Students did not just stop at helping organize #GivingTuesday for KRB, they took KRB’s environmental message to heart in a cleanup effort at STAC.

STAC is going green at a special event this November, and it’s not just because the Grinch will be there. STAC students will host “#GivingTuesday Games with the Grinch” on Tuesday, November 29th, in the Romano Student Alumni Center to raise awareness for the Keep Rockland Beautiful organization.

Keep Rockland Beautiful (KRB) is a nonprofit which has protected Rockland County’s environment through cleanup efforts, fundraisers, and youth education programs for 25 years.

The hope for this #GivingTuesday event is to reach out to college students, a new demographic for the nonprofit.

STAC students in the Content Development for Public Relations and Social Media Marketing courses have developed a comprehensive public relations plan and social media strategy to help organize the #GivingTuesday event. Their work is the culmination of a semester-long service learning project on behalf of KRB.

KRB Executive Director Sonia Cairo says, “I am so excited to be working with STAC students this semester. I love their enthusiasm and am so impressed by their efforts!”

She continued, “We are already starting to implement the tools they have provided in our public relations and social media efforts.”

Associate Communication Arts Professor Elaine Winship leads service projects like this one each semester. Winship emphasized the importance of such projects in preparing her students for the workforce.

“Service-learning activities and assignments allow students to build marketable skills and gain real world experience… The immersive aspects of these experiential learning activities are intense, yet prepare students for future internships and employment opportunities,” she said.

Communication arts student Kayla Healey, who has helped work on the project, echoed these sentiments.

Healey stated, “helping KRB has allowed me to give back during the holidays while acquiring field experience and building marketable skills I can now add to my resume.”

The “#GivingTuesday Games with the Grinch” event will feature educational games about KRB, free refreshments, a cup pong tournament umpired by the Grinch, and various raffles and fundraising opportunities. It will be held in the Romano Student Alumni Center from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All Rockland community members are welcome to join the #GivingTuesday festivities. Students hope the hearts of everyone within the community will grow with joy and happiness—just like the Grinch!—as participants support Keep Rockland Beautiful.
