Spartan Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With College of Staten Island

The STAC softball team swept a doubleheader with the College of Staten Island on Thursday, winning 6-4 and 11-0.
With these wins, STAC improves to 11-7 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the East Coast Conference.
In game 1, CSI took a 3-run lead early.
In the second inning, Freshman Adrian Coria responded with a single up the middle, advancing Amanda Demmerle to second base and earning two RBIs with runs from both Elyse Marcano and Sarah Williams to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.
Abbie Landrum stepped to the plate and doubled deep into left-center, scoring Coria and Demmerle for a 4-3 lead.
In the fourth, Coria flew out to center field, scoring Marciano with a sacrifice fly. Landrum followed with another sacrifice fly to right field that scored Demmerle, widening the lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, CSI scored on an RBI single to make the score 6-4, but STAC held on for the victory.
In the second game, grad student Carissa Della Vecchia and the Spartans obliterated the CSI Dolphins, beating them 11 to 0. Della Vecchia (6-2) allowed three hits over five innings.
In the first inning, the Spartans took an early lead.
Landrum singled up the middle, scoring Demmerle. Emilie Oliver singled to the right, advancing Tara Hagan to third and scoring Landrum to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Spartans turned up the heat with seven runs.
Coira started things by reaching on a fielder’s choice, advancing Demmerle to second and Marcano to third. Della Vecchia scored.
Landrum followed with a single and advanced to second, moving Coira to third before Demmerle scored on a wild pitch.
Raposo singled to left field, scoring Landrum and Coria.
Deanna DeCaro walked and Raposo scored on another wild pitch. Della Vecchia doubled to right field, scoring DeCaro.
In the third inning the story was the same, with the Spartans scoring two more runs. Raposo singled to left field, advancing to second, and Demmerle scored.
Hagan singled to left field, scoring Raposo to put the Spartans up 11-0.
Della Vecchia struck out three in the top of the fifth and the game ended under mercy rules.
STAC plays D’Youville in a Monday doubleheader in Buffalo. The game starts at 1 p.m.
